I'd disagree with this, never wear service dress, and never ever wear semi-formal to a non Air Force event. Honestly it looks tacky. Mess dress is acceptable for a ball/black tie event (again only if you're not the only one in uniform). Stay clear of wearing service dress unless the AF is saying to wear it.
