I know helmet materials deteriorate over time, but I wonder about a full face helmet I have owned for about 8 years, but have worn it less than 8 times. It looks and feels like new, but wonder if just the years have made it less than protective. Just feels odd to think of chucking this new-like...
As far as materials go, injection molded plastics have come a long way in the last decade. Helmet manufacturers can produce shells less epensively than using fiberglass and composite laminates which generally require more hand work. There are some trade offs though. I wear a helmet when I ride because I have fallen under various circumstances over the last 50 years of riding on the road. A helmet has prevented serious injuries from bike race-related crashes, knocked down by a car while standing still, out of control downhill crash, etc. Falls may happen due to my actions or someone else's, but I want to be 'covered' in either case.
